An unusual Jewish Holiday
Lag BaOmer 2025
Lag BaOmer, the 33rd day of
the Omer count—this year, May 16, 2025—is a festive day on the Jewish calendar that honors Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, author of the Zohar. It is celebrated with outings (on which children traditionally play with bows and arrows), bonfires, parades and other joyous events. Many visit the resting place (in Meron, northern Israel) of Rabbi Shimon, the anniversary of whose passing is on this day.

Begins sunset of Sunday, June 1, 2025
Ends nightfall of Tuesday, June 3, 2025
Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. The Ten Commandments are read in synagogues, just as they were in the desert on Mt. Sinai over 3,300 years ago. The Book of Ruth is traditionally read. Also, there is a custom of eating dairy foods as we celebrate, so dig into those kugels and cheesecakes, people!

RETIRING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I'M JUST SAYIN'
by Yetta Dritch
My involvement with Havurah began in 2005 and has continued to the present. While my term as Co-President is ending and I no longer live in Sun City, my heart remains with Havurah.
Over these 20 years, I have seen so many changes in the Sun City community, particularly in our membership. We have all had changes and challenges in our lives. Members have moved in, moved out, or passed on. Still, Havurah continues—and must continue—to survive.
Havurah has been the glue that has held our small community of Jews and non-Jews together in both good and bad times. We have come together in grief and in celebration. We have been there for those in need of support, and we have been there to share each other’s nachas. The key here is that we have been there and available to meet the needs of our Havurah Family.
While I am leaving my position as Co-President, I plan to be around to see Havurah flourish. Everyone must do their part. Help by offering suggestions and following that up with volunteering to get it done! If you want to be part of the solution, don’t be a part of the problem. Get involved. Many hands make events easier to plan, execute, and enjoy. More importantly, it sustains the life of Havurah.
I’m just sayin’.
